Spiderman Universe Guide

Latest posts by Jessica Vine (see all)

Spiderman first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1962. Some people thought Spiderman would be a total flop because people hate spiders, right? Well, apparently not as much as you might think.

“Spiderman, spiderman. Does everything a spider can,” and all that.

Now, you can’t walk outside your door without seeing someone wearing a spiderman t-shirt, hat, backpack, etc. Every true Marvel comic book lover knows there is more to Spiderman than Peter Parker.

For those of you reading this that have only seen the movies that started in 2002, you have a lot to learn, and I’m really excited to share all this super nerdy information about the famous Web-Head and his variants.

Come along with me as we look deeper into Spiderman.

The Multiverse

Before we get into the insane number of Spidermen in this article, you need to understand something. The short version is that there are multiple universes, but the main universe is Earth 616.

For instance, the Spiderman that is with Mary Jane Watson is from Earth 616, but the one with Gwen Stacy is from another universe. Now that you understand that let’s look into all the many Spidermen.

Peter Parker (Earth 616)

Peter Parker (Earth 616)

Peter Parker is Spiderman from Earth 616. He’s a super nerd with a love for learning, but he also works for the Daily Bugle getting pictures of Spiderman.

He is an orphan raised by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Peter got his spidey powers when a spider bit him at a science expo. The spider was radioactive, which is why it made Peter get his arachnid powers.

Peter Parker Earth 616 Powers & Abilities

  • Superhuman strength
  • Superhuman reflexes
  • Superhuman speed
  • Superhuman durability
  • Healing
  • Spidey sense alert
  • Heightened senses
  • Ability to crawl walls

Peter didn’t start out as a noble vigilante. At first, he wanted to use his new powers to entertain people, but after he let a burglar by because of his self-consumed attitude, he changed his ways.

That burglar ended up killing his beloved Uncle Ben, and he noticed that he did need to be responsible with his powers and help people.

Spiderman is a fan favorite and a favorite for other cool superheroes like the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.

The attention he gets isn’t always good, though. His big villains include Doc Oc, Electro, Mysterio, Venom, Green Goblin, Vulture, Sandman, and Kraven the Hunter.

Green Goblin is Peter’s nemesis and continues to reappear in his life to wreak havoc. Sometimes, it seems like he comes back from the dead to haunt him.

Peter hated Green Goblin so much because he killed his college girlfriend, Gwen Stacy. Peter didn’t lose love forever, though, because he and his once-good friend and then turned lover, Mary Jane Watson, married after a long time of back and forth.

Cosmic Spiderman

Peter Parker (Earth 13)

Cosmic Spiderman is Spiderman aka Peter Parker from Earth 13 on max power and is more powerful than all other spidermen. We’re talking about the kind of power that is as powerful as Shazam, Sentry, and Superman.

He got his cosmic powers and became Captain Universe by getting hit by Enigma Force in a lab accident. It flowed through Peter’s body, giving him the powers of Captain Universe, which then made him into Cosmic Spiderman.

In case you don’t know who Captain Universe is, he is the guardian of Eternity. He isn’t even really a he, but instead, a uni-power. A uni-power is a sentient energy field that is actually the universe itself manifesting. Enigma force is a force that no one knows much about but is basically a mystical energy field.

Keep in mind that uni-power has to choose the person it goes into, so maybe there was a reason it chose Spiderman. Whatever the reason was, after this super upgrade, Cosmic Spiderman fought to protect the balance of the universe.

Cosmic Spiderman Powers & Abilities

  • Same abilities as Peter Parker from Earth 616
  • Energy emission
  • Energy absorption
  • God-like strength
  • Unlimited invulnerability
  • Hyperspace travel
  • Cosmic senses
  • Cosmic self-sustenance

He’s done some pretty cool things with his powers, for instance, punching Thor into orbit.

Even though Cosmic Spiderman had an amazing run, it didn’t end well for him. He helped many other Spidermen stand up to the Inheritors that were trying to kill them, but he couldn’t go out of his universe or he’d lose his cosmic powers. The Inheritors then came to Earth 13, where their leader, Solus, feasted on his life force, which killed Peter.

Her Uncle Ben and Aunt May were onboard with the idea, and the spider bit her at age nine. It wasn’t until she was fourteen, however, that she got into a fight with Mysterio, who is a supervillain.

The way she got into this mess was because Daredevil came to pull her out of class. He told her Mysterio was causing trouble by using a local gang, so she went to help him.

Not only did Wolf Spider want to take out all heroes of his universe, but he traveled to other universes using a shard of Siege Perilous. His goal was to find the rest of the heroes and end them as well.

In one of the universes he went to, he found Blood Spider’s world and became an ally of the Lizard King. Their goal was to turn everyone into vampires, but Spiderman, Blood Spider, and Kid Arachnid stopped their plan.

These good guys thought Wolf Spider was a vampire but later found out he wasn’t.

He went to other worlds as well, but they ran him off until finally, on the homeworld of Miles Morales, he tried absorbing all the life forces of the spidermen. When he did this, he couldn’t handle it, resulting in death.

He got power-hungry, though, and used transportation technology to bring other spidermen to his universe so he could absorb his powers. When he brought Spiderman of Earth 616 to his universe, the Amazing Spider ended up weaker due to dimension portal feedback.

Through a series of events, his spirit ended up in Hell and his body in a coma. He got a second chance to live by being filled with the spirits and powers of the repentant damned. When he awoke, he found he’d become the Ghost Spider.

The only true cure for his spidey problems was Michael Morbius’ blood. The only problem was that sharks ate Michael. What made things even more tragic was that pieces of Michael’s body washed up on shore, but Peter didn’t notice.

After a fight with Doc Oc, he found his new arms pretty helpful. He was also able to save Gwen Stacy from Green Goblin, which was a major plus for this timeline.

Later, Six Arm Spiderman loses his life on Earth 928. Daemos killed him while he tried to help out Spiderman, Miguel O’Hara, and Lady Spider.

Peter got captured, and eventually, Annie and Mary Jane had to help him out. After they got Peter back, the family returned to their normal lives.

Mary Jane eventually gave up being Spinneret because her suit mimicked his powers and drained him—especially when they were close together. She then got a new biotech suit that allowed her to mimic without draining, but it was the Venom Symbiote that survived the fire we talked about earlier.

Things didn’t go as planned, and Miguel ended up with an experimental D.N.A. template that cured him of Rapture, but it made him half spider.

The next day Patton ate a mouse, and that made his spider abilities come to life.

Sara Jane came to his house, and he kissed her before biting her. The bite left babies in her neck, which came out not long after.

She went with her boss J. Jonah Jameson to report on a scientific demonstration. She was there at the same time Peter Parker was there with his classmates. The radioactive spider landed on a shoulder, but this time it wasn’t Peter’s shoulder—it was Betty’s shoulder, and it bit her.

Peter saw what happened to her and got her boss to give her the day off. Since she had the day off, Peter invited her to come to have dinner with him. That evening, she realized she had developed spider abilities.

Peter thought it would be a good idea for her to take up crimefighting so they could make money off photos Peter would take and sell to the Daily Bugle.

As this happened with May, the grandson of the Green Goblin, Normie Osborn, sought to restore the family name. May put on Ben Reilly’s spiderman costume to fight against him but worried her parents burned it to stop her crimefighting schemes.

May went through some extremely hard times, including an imposter murdering her dad, Peter. During Spider-Geddon, she sent spider bots to the universe where the Inheritors were in an effort to keep them there.

Finally, after many fights, she and her team defeated the Inheritors and turned them into babies.

He figured out he had superhuman abilities and told his best friend, Ganke Lee. They noticed he had powers similar to Spiderman’s. He didn’t want to be a hero, so he decided to leave that work to the actual Spiderman.

Sadly, months later, Spiderman died saving his family from Osborn, which left a gaping hole in the hero scape. Miles decided to follow in Peter Parker’s footsteps and continue his legacy.

Miles goes through many fights, but one of the big ones was with Omega Red, who wasn’t happy to see another Spiderman. Miles used his venom blast to put a stop to the villain quickly.

During his Spidey journey, he joined the Ultimates to train and become better. He even teamed up with Spider-Woman during the battle for Wyoming and Project Pegasus to beat the terrorist group Hydra.

After the death of Peter’s mother, he put down the spider mantle and refused to pick it up. He had a girlfriend named Katie Bishop and seemed happy, but he returned to defeat Roxxon, who had cloned Jessica Drew who’s origin was as a clone of Peter Parker.

Another unfortunate twist was that his girlfriend’s parents were members of HYDRA. Katie didn’t know this either, but they told her, and she showed her loyalty but telling them that Miles Morales was Spiderman.

She first noticed something was going on when she accidentally webbed up her parents.

Later, a man named Ezekial Sims took her away to train her. After learning Morlun was tracking her, he locked her in a room that blocked Morlun so he couldn’t get her. Silk was able to leave at any time, but she stayed in the room filled with food, tapes, and books on the outside world so she would be safe.

Years later, Peter Parker found out about her and went to free her. She didn’t want to leave and was upset with him because Morlun would chase them. Peter finally got to tell her Morlun was dead, and she happily headed toward her parent’s home in a silk costume.

Sadly, Morlun returned from the dead for the third time and started searching for Silk. She got super mad at Peter, and they had a fight, but soon after, they started an intimate relationship.

Later, Peter decided to stay in New York, but Silk went off with Spider-UK’s team. She noticed most of these Spidermen were versions of Peter and tried to see if she felt an attraction but the only one she had an attraction to was Kaine, Peter’s clone.

She had many other adventures but finally got to focus on finding her parents. Even though their records had been erased, she kept looking.

After Earth 616 and Earth 1610 collied and killed everyone in both universes, it returned to life, but they had no memory of their ruin.

A genetically-engineered spider bit Gwen, and she got spider-like superpowers and started crimefighting.

She was known as Spider-Woman during this time and focused on enjoying her fame vs. really helping people. After a comment from her father about Spider-Woman, she decided to really help people.

Retired crimefighter Janet van Dyne gave Gwen a set of web-shooters and a costume to help her out.

Peter Parker looked up to Spider-Woman and wanted to be like her, but the experiment he did on himself didn’t go well. Peter ended up turning into a lizard-like creature.

The lizard creature crashed the prom, and Gwen fought him and injured him so bad that he died. Due to this, the media labeled her a criminal because there was no proof of him being a lizard person—only Peter’s body was there.

Her father finally found out who she was and let her get away, but he was close to locking her up.

She went to fight on Spider U.K.’s team for a little while, but she came back to strained relationships with her friends and family.

When he learned Peter Parker’s aunt was sick, he went back to New York. He made good with Peter and helped him with his crimefighting work.

Seward Trainer and Norman Osborn made Peter Parker and Ben Reilly believe Peter was the clone for a while. Later, when Peter and Ben fought the Green Goblin and Osborn, they found out that wasn’t the case as Ben got impaled and died in Peter’s arms.

Sadly, Miles Warren brought him back and ended up killing him and bringing him back over and over to test his technology.

This drove Ben mad, and he overthrew his captor eventually, and he became the new Jackal.

Eventually, through some twists and turns of fate, Ben became the corporate-sponsored Spiderman of the Beyond Corporation.

Conclusion

Is your head spinning from all the different variants of Spiderman? You probably have a little bit better understanding of why there were three different Spidermen, and Marvel comics fans weren’t freaking out about it now. The moviemakers didn’t change Spiderman’s stories.

Those were Peter Parkers from different universes. However, some fans are still pretty upset about Tom Hollins’ Spiderman having the iron spider costume because that’s supposed to be a totally different outfit—but I guess we will have to live with it.

Anyway, the main thing is that you understand more about Spiderman and why he’s—or should I say they—are so beloved by fans. If you get lost talking to your other more well-versed Spidey fan friends, you can use this article as your cheat sheet, so make sure to drop a bookmark.
